How Hybrids Ruined...

How Hybrid Vegetables Ruined America

The industrial revolution brought mechanization which slowly eliminated the small farm and unleashed corporate farming. With small farmers consumers had a person that cared about the quality of the food he produced and sold. Corporate farms however, are inspired by the bottom line on a monthly profit and loss statement. This motivated the big agri-farms to focus on quantity rather than quality. One of the ways they could eliminate costs was to invest in very expensive machinery to plant and more importantly harvest the crop.

Until the industrial revolution, all vegetables were organically grown heirlooms. However, heirlooms come in various sizes and textures and even colors. Machines, unlike human harvesters are unable to process random sizes. Another disadvantage machines have is they lack the softness of the human hand, as they process crops through steel shoots and drop them onto conveyor belts at high speed. This all forced the profit driven to invest in altering heirloom vegetables so that all were similar in size, weight and had tough skins to survive the harvest of a mean machine.

Simultaneously, corporate grocery stores began to sprout up and replace the mom and pop corner stores. They too were and are today motivated by profits. Accountants noticed that the variations with heirlooms often caused shoppers to select only the best tomato, leaving behind the odd colored and shaped juicy produce on the shelf to go to waste. Accountants hate waste and thus invited the hybrid vegetables corporate machines wanted into the stores because they had a much more uniform appearance. Although the old corner grocery store was concerned with the quality of the food they sold, the newer chain stores were only interested in the  consistent movement of product and to eliminate the 5% loss. Out went the healthy and beautiful heirlooms and in came the sterile clone hybrids.

As a result, Americans lost organically grown heirloom vegetables and human planted and harvested food. The hybrids ruled the world and nobody remembered the wonderful taste or the health they received from heirlooms. They forgot about the jobs agriculture offered as people were forced from the farms and into cubicles. Americans have struggled with poor health, unemployment and debt ever since hybrid vegetables were forced upon them.
